Return to school or college after a long break? Feeling anxious about upcoming exams? Here are some practical tips from an adult student on how to prepare for assessments.

Prepare for assessments

Develop a study plan.

The first step is to sit down and make a realistic study plan. Consider how much time you have before the exam and how much material you need to cover. Try not to overwhelm yourself by setting unrealistic goals. Dedicate a certain number of hours each week to studying and stick to it. Remember to also schedule in regular breaks!

Create a study space.

Find a quiet space in your home where you can spread out your materials and focus on studying. This space should be away from distractions like the TV or your bed. If you don’t have a dedicated room for studying, set up a small desk or table in a quiet corner of your house.

Get organised.

Organise your notes and materials according to the topics you need to revise. This will make studying more efficient and less overwhelming. Create a revision timetable that covers all the topics you need to study, and make sure to leave enough time for each one. You can use online resources, such as Quizlet, to create digital flashcards for revision purposes.

Take practice exams.

One of the best ways to prepare for an assessment is by taking practice exams under timed conditions. This will help you understand what types of questions are likely to come up, as well as get used to working under pressure. You can find practice exams online or in textbooks related to your field of study.

Reach out for help.

If you’re struggling with preparations, reach out for help from friends, family, or your tutor/lecturer. Talking through tough concepts with someone else can really help clarify things in your mind. Alternatively, there are plenty of online forums and study groups that can offer support and advice.

Relax! And don't stress.

Finally, remember that it’s okay to feel stressed during exam season – everyone goes through it! Just make sure not to let the stress take over and affect your studies negatively. Take some time out for yourself every now and then, do some exercises or meditation to stay calm, and eat healthy foods to keep your energy levels up.

Preparing for assessments doesn't have to be stressful! By following these simple tips, you'll be on your way to acing those exams in no time at all.
