We are pleased to announce the appointment of the new Council of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) in South Africa. The Council is the highest decision-making body of the CHE and is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of higher education policy in the country.

In an official statement via Communique 1 of 2023, the Council on Higher Education (CHE) Published the following announcement.

The new Council is made up of experienced and distinguished individuals from various sectors, including academia, business, and civil society. The Council is headed by Professor Narend Baijnath, who is the current Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Durban University of Technology.


Other members of the Council include Dr. Phindile Mnguni, who is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zululand, Professor Caroline Nicholson, who is a Professor of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand, Mr. Pule Mabe, who is the spokesperson for the African National Congress, and Mr. Sizwe Nxasana, who is the Chairman of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.


The appointment of the new Council is a significant milestone for the CHE, as it marks the beginning of a new era in the development and implementation of higher education policy in South Africa. The Council has a critical role to play in ensuring that the country's higher education system is relevant, accessible, and of high quality.
