The Institute is focused on the creation of knowledge that is trans-disciplinary in nature, socially relevant, actively promotes diversity and heterogeneity, and of which the intent is to apply situated learning, problem probing and decision making as critical constructs to solve work-based problems. In doing such, The Institute intends to contribute towards the professional development of the people involved.

In 2011 a group of registered private higher education institutions formed a voluntary association to provide a working platform for addressing common needs and interests including the promotion of a level and conducive operating environment in higher education in South Africa, increasing understanding of the private higher education community within the overall education sector and participating in all processes that will influence the development of the sector. This body was known as the Private Higher Education Interest Group.

SAPHE builds on the aims and objectives of the original interest group to provide a strong, focused and coordinated voice to represent accurately the specific position of private higher education providers in terms of legislation, regulation, compliance requirements and operating conditions that can either hinder or facilitate the development of a strong private higher education sector in the country.

The FPD strategic direction focuses on rapidly expanding FPD’s educational offering (both formal qualifications at under- and postgraduate level and professional development courses). This will involve expanding the number of FPD schools, curricular development and instructional design capacity and leveraging FPD Group ICT capacity to enter into strategic partnerships with international e-learning providers and expand FPD’s offering of blended and e-learning courses. In designing curricula FPD will embrace a user-centric design and incorporate ethical decision making in curricular design during this strategic cycle. The massive shortage of healthcare professionals in Africa, has been highlighted respectively, by the World Health Organisation and the Academy of Sciences of South Africa’s report on Reconceptualising Health Professional Education. The latter report on the potential role that the private sector could play in alleviating such shortages. FPD is responding to this challenge by entering the undergraduate health professional education market through its Nursing School. FPD will also counter weak local economic growth by exploring opportunities in the subSaharan Africa region by actively expanding FPD’s products and services in the region.
