Drug Resistant (DR) Tuberculosis Clinicians Short Course

The proposed clinical training programme serves to up-skill health care professionals to diagnose and manage and prevent the spread of DR TB to reduce DR TB deaths and disease. This will be done by upgrading the skills of clinicians, nurses and other professional HCW working in public and private clinics and hospitals in South Africa in the diagnosing, management and prevention of DR TB.

Who should enrol?

The course is aimed primarily at health care workers who wish to improve and update their clinical skills and competence in the comprehensive DRTB prevention, care and treatment.

Course Content
The training includes:
  • All aspects of a comprehensive strategy for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of DR TB.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, participants should be able to:
  • Understand the epidemiological features and immunological responses associated with increased risk for DR TB;
  • Identify the clinical manifestations of DR TB
  • Recognise the diagnostic tools (including GeneXpert) available for diagnosis of DR TB, their differences, advantages and possible shortcomings and know how to apply it
  • Formulate a treatment regimen for a patient DR TB while understanding the pharmacokinetics and potential toxicities of that regimen (including in vulnerable patients)
  • Understand DR TB prevention

To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course, participants should successfully complete the assessment process.

About the FPD Nursing School

The FPD strategic direction focuses on rapidly expanding FPD’s educational offering (both formal qualifications at under- and postgraduate level and professional development courses). This will involve expanding the number of FPD schools, curricular development and instructional design capacity and leveraging FPD Group ICT capacity to enter into strategic partnerships with international e-learning providers and expand FPD’s offering of blended and e-learning courses. In designing curricula FPD will embrace a user-centric design and incorporate ethical decision making in curricular design during this strategic cycle. The massive shortage of healthcare professionals in Africa, has been highlighted respectively, by the World Health Organisation and the Academy of Sciences of South Africa’s report on Reconceptualising Health Professional Education.
