The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has started with its month-long capacity building sessions aimed at strengthening relationship between the student body, council members, academic board and management at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in KwaZulu Natal, Durban.
The training programme is in collaboration with a non- governmental education policy organisation – the Centre for Education Policy Development (CEPD) and Student Representative Council (SRCs) at selected colleges around the country.
It seeks to cultivate effective leadership and developing life skills that students can apply both inside and outside their tertiary life. The nationwide programme will be facilitated by independent specialists in communication strategies and conflict management.
Speakers have emphasized the need for constructive communication and conflict resolution skills as key ingredients for effective leadership. Delegates were reminded to remain accountable to their electorate and the values of collective leadership.
Students were also encouraged to first consider negotiations, deal-making and facilitation as preferred problem solving tools in conflict management when dealing with college management and other stakeholders.
The nationwide winter sessions are set to also take place in the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng, North West, Northern Cape and the Western Cape throughout the month of July.
